Corralling Craft Supplies

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Craft and hobby things can take over a home. And Quatrefoil says she has only a small apartment, so what to do with hobby supplies?

Declutter

The first step is decluttering. I know crafty types like to keep everything because it may be used in a project at some point in time. But you are limiting time and space for current and loved projects.

And if you have partly finished projects, finish those before going on to another project or decide you are no longer interested in the project and give the material away. (Yes, it’s ok not to finish a project.)

Hiding Your Supplies

Find out what storage space you have. Separate the area, even if it is just with a screen to corral some of the mess.

There are art bags that can hold things like scrapbook and card supplies, quilting, sewing, knitting, etc. Keeping it in one or two bags will keep it from taking over your home. Then when you want to create you can wheel it over to the kitchen table.

A closet with doors that close can be good for keeping it out of sight.

You can also try an armoire or stand up cabinet and add shelves to it for your craft supplies.

Those four door plastic carts can hold things then wheel into a closet until you are ready to use it.

We use a long thin basket for our newspapers that goes under the couch. You can see if you can fit a current craft project in one. And some ottamans open up and you can put things like knitting projects in them. End tables and coffee tables often have places to store things as well.

For people with more space, they might want to convert a room or part of the basement into a craft center. The most important thing is to keep like with like and label everything. What groups of things do you need to organize for your craft room?

My daughter has an old table in the basement and corrals things with a cabinet and various shoe boxes, a plastic drawer system and a few big boxes under the table for material.

It’s not necessary to buy expensive organizers. Most people have boxes, baskets and containers around their house that can be used.

Try a pegboard for crafting tools.

Bookshelves lined with boxes for craft supplies work well.

Hang things on the walls like in Ali’s fantastic scrapbook room.

And see if you can find some tips at DIY Maven’s simple craft room.

Maintenance

Don’t browse hobby stores and pick up something cute you might want some day if space is an issue for you. Buy by the project.

How do you organize your craft space?

Quick Tip on Appointments

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Have you ever been sitting there waiting for someone who never showed up? Or perhaps you forgot an appointment yourself?

Something I have started recently that is working well for me is to reconfirm appointments.

One of the last things on my work day schedule is to reconfirm appointments. So I email clients confirming our call or chat the next day, call friends if we are getting together tomorrow, or call any other appointment I may have.

The only exception is the doctor. I call the office not long before my appointment to make sure the doctor is on time and that he isn’t in emergency surgery.

Not only does confirming the appointments help them remember, it also helps me plan for the next day and reminds me of what is coming up.

Life Evaluation

Posted by: | Comments (0)

This month is my birthday, so every October I get the urge to evaluate my life. See what is working. Decide if I am living how I want to live. Here are some questions to help you with your own evaluation:

  1. Where do I see myself in the next year?
  2. What am I passionate about in my life right now?
  3. Am I living by my values? Is there any place I am not in integrity?
  4. Are my needs being met? Am I meeting the needs of those close to me?
  5. What are my strengths? Am I using them?
  6. Am I doing things to the best of my ability or is there a place I need to raise my standards?
  7. How are my boundaries with others? Do I often feel taken advantage of?
  8. Is my daily routine helping me or boring me? Is there anything I want to add or take away from my routine?
  9. What is standing in my way of doing my dream? What can I do about it?
  10. What am I tolerating in my life that is draining my energy?

You can ask yourself these questions, whether it’s your birthday or not. Review your answers and decide what actions you want to take. Remember, you are creating YOUR life, not someone else’s.

Plans for the Next 3 Months

Posted by: | Comments (3)

This past weekend I was discussing with my family things we might do this coming season – autumn for us. I’ve noted lately that some of my goals have been really dry. I thought instead of thinking goals I would think of things I wanted and my family wanted.

So here is what we came up with:

  • Reread the Thursday Next series
  • Have sparkling apple juice
  • Get cider
  • Play with life skills with the kids
  • Read the newest Harry Potter
  • Celebrate my Dad’s, Father-in-Law, Sister-in-Law, Aunt and my birthdays
  • Go biking
  • Go hiking
  • The Declutter Club
  • Finish the 2008 calendar – still playing with the theme, declutter or something else?
  • Play checkers and Sorry
  • Feel healthy and energetic
  • Learn more about prayer to go along with the series at church
  • Make soup, stew and chilli
  • Go to a craft show

We’ve already made caramel apples, bought HoneyCrisp apples at the Farmer’s Market, made soup, went to a craft show and had candy corn.

What do you want to do?

Organized for Christmas

Organised for Christmas – Guest Post from Marcia Francois

[Guest post from a friend who is much more organized than I am]

There are less than 3 months to Christmas.

When you think about that, what do you feel? Do you feel overwhelmed and just a little bit stressed at everything you have to do? Or do you feel excited at the idea of spending time with friends and family?

My best Christmasses have always been when I’ve been organised, prepared and more importantly, when I didn’t leave everything right up until December.

Here are a couple of things to consider so that you have an organised Christmas this year:

  1. Your vision for a great Christmas

Decide, together with your family, if you want to celebrate with many spiritual activities, spend time at home with just your immediate family, do lots of baking, etc.

  1. Christmas cards

Will you be sending cards by themselves, or with a family newsletter? Or will you be sending cards at all? Do you have a list of recipients?

  1. Christmas gifts

Will you be giving gifts this year? Are you making any gifts or are you buying them all? Do you have a gift-giving budget? Remember to budget for gift wrap, gift tags and, if necessary, postage to your loved ones who live in a different city.

  1. Christmas Day

Where will you spend the day – with your parents or his? Or will the family gather at your house? Who will cook the food? Which recipes will you use? Do you know where to find them?

How far in advance should you plan?

Well, that depends on how much stress you can tolerate J

Personally, I like to have gifts done by the end of October and cards by mid-November. That’s because I really don’t enjoy the stress of having to get the perfect gift with no time to spare. Add to that the crowded malls and you can practically see my blood pressure rising!

I like to start planning at the beginning of October and I set myself mini-goals of compiling my card list first, then planning backwards so I write out a certain number of cards per week until they’re all done by my self-imposed due date.

And I do the same for gifts. I also wrap a few gender-neutral gifts just in case someone pops around with something for me. It’s relaxing for me to prepare a beautifully-wrapped gift with a gift tag because I believe that presentation is part of the gift.

Something I do that has saved me lots of money is I no longer buy Christmas gift wrap. Instead, I buy red and green coloured craft paper and matching ribbon. I can use the paper year-round with a different bow so that it doesn’t look Christmassy for birthday gifts.

Change of Plans

Posted by: | Comments (2)

This morning my son was riding his moped to school and hit a rock. He skidded banging his helmet, ripping his jeans and scraping his arm, side, hand, foot and knee. The police brought him home and it took an hour to go to the store for the biggest bandages they had, patch him up, drive him to his moped, check it out and watch him drive off to school again.

I’ve been talking with friends recently about things coming up in our days that change our plans around. You know, emergencies, family dropping by, a cold, a phone call from a friend that needs are help.

The funny thing is we act shocked when something pops up to change our plans. Even though just about every day something happens. Yesterday there was a work emergency. Sunday it was my son not getting out of bed when I asked so we were almost late for church. Then finding out I was an hour off so we were actually early. Monday had a last minute meeting.

Do you you have room in your schedule for life happening? Is there an extra hour or two, so you don’t become completely frazzled if events don’t go smoothly? It may be time to plan less in your day so you can live more. No matter what life brings you.

Time Maps

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Two of my clients are making changes and adding goals, so they wanted a way to put their goals and schedules together.

I suggested a time map. A time map is extremely useful in trying to make time for things in your life. Julie Morgenstern has an excellent article on creating Time Maps:
