I do this too. In every room throughout the day.

It used to be an effort, but after about a month it became second nature. We have a box that lives in the hall for the charity shop and things get regularly tossed into there.

I also got into the habit of putting things straight back where I got them from after I used them. That was a crucial one that helped me turn the corner to a neater looking house.
