How You Get Good Family Stories

Posted by: | Comments (0)

This past weekend, my husband and I went searching for tracks to drive on in our new, used Jeep. We came to one extremely bumpy dirt road with deep grooves. At the beginning I braced for each bump. But, quickly found out that by tensing my body I made it feel worse.

Instead, I loosened my body and let it flow where it wanted to go. My head bobbed, my waist danced from side to side and I didn’t feel nearly as clobbered.

(Not our Jeep, but you get the picture)

This is a good way to look at the upcoming holiday season. Turkeys will burn, toys will be sold out, you’ll forget to send a card to someone. Expect that things will get screwed up. And go with the flow. They aren’t the disasters we make them out to be when we are over-stressed. In fact they are often the stories for future holidays.

Remember when mom got strep throat and we ended up eating turkey pot pies for thanksgiving? Remember the snow storm where we slept in a gas station parking lot because all of the hotels were filled? Remember how badly you wanted tickle me elmo? And they were sold out, but you got so excited a month after Christmas when you finally got it.  (All true stories for me)

What if this year you relaxed? If you didn’t get worked up over the little things? I want you to really be happy and merry this season.

If you want a Simpler Holiday plan:

Do you want a holiday plan that doesn’t have you do a million things you just don’t have time for?

I’ve tried the holiday plans that are online. But, I never finished them. Having simplified my Christmas I didn’t use many of the parts of those plans. And they just made me feel guilty.

Would you like a simpler holiday plan ?

I created a plan that I use to keep my holidays organized without overwhelming me.

Bundle it with the Simple Annual Plan to help plan your year ahead.

Valentine’s Day Decorating

Posted by: | Comments (5)

This week I was seeing some beautiful Valentine’s Day decorating online. So gorgeous and intricate. I was starting to feel a little envious and I wanted to buy a bunch of decorations so I could create my own Valentine’s Day masterpiece. I know by going to the store recently that there are plenty of decorations to buy. Each year the stores seem to put up more and more for each holiday. I don’t remember my parents and grandparents decorating for any holiday except Christmas and maybe a few fall items.

Before I ran out to the store, I came to my senses. Did I really want to buy more stuff that I have to store for over 11 months of the year? Did I want another expense that most likely in the next few years will become clutter when a new way of decorating shows up? And did I really want to spend the time it will take to put up that kind of display?

The answers to all those questions for me was no.

I’m sure for some of you the answers will be yes, and if you have the money and the time it’s a great creative outlet.

Yesterday I did my Valentine’s Day decorating, which took just a few minutes. I brought up my pink plastic storage box from the basement. I found a few things I wanted to use. First I hung a wire red heart.

Then I put my two love tea cups on my entertainment center. (We have no mantle here.)

And finally I hung a Valentine’s Day small box on the porch. Just enough decorating to show a new holiday without having to put all my current decorations away or having to dust around too many knickknacks.

Before you buy any new decorations this holiday, be sure to answer the questions for yourself.

bow box

If you haven’t taken down your holiday decorations, you will probably be doing that shortly. And to make it easier on yourself next year, store carefully.

You may want to do a quick run through of the holiday boxes of decorations you didn’t put out this year. Do you really plan on using them again? If not, it might be time to get rid of some of them. Think about how much storage space you have and how much decorations you use once a year are taking up.

Make sure all your boxes are labeled so you can find them later. My preference is for red boxes so I know at a glance which are for Christmas. But, other people like clear boxes so they can see what is in them. If possible put boxes on some kind of shelving rather than on the floor.

Most of the holiday decorations keep best in their original boxes.

If you always put certain items in certain rooms you can label your boxes by room (kitchen, foyer, living room.) I tend to mix it up every year so I store by type (garlands, ceramics, tree accessories.)

The first thing I like to do is the advent box. This box gets opened first in late November. It has the nativity scene still in its original box, the advent wreath, holiday mugs and towels and the card wall display. For years I had to open all the boxes to find what I needed first. Then the light dawned – how about keeping them all together!

We have one box for ornaments that holds each of our four family members ornament boxes and a box for generic ornaments. Dust the ornaments before putting them away to keep them lasting longer. We wrap ornaments that no longer have packages in paper towel, Christmas washcloths, towels or pot holders. You can create your own ornament dividers or buy them. Small ornaments can be stored in egg cartons. We also keep the original packaging when possible, especially for the Hallmark ornaments.

I love wreath bags to keep the wreath nice. Though big pillowcases work as well. Use canned air spray to clean wreaths off before storing. And garland usually goes in plastic bags rather than boxes just for easier storing. Plastic bags that things like pillows come in are great! Label the ends of the garland or the plastic bag for where it goes so the right size garland ends up in the right place.

Lights can be wrapped around paper towel tubes or they now have light boxes.

Wrapping paper and ribbon can be put into a hanging garment bag or an under the bed storage container.

Tree Storage bags are helpful for keeping artificial trees nice without the holes end up in plastic bags. And they keep fresher than stored only in the box. I actually like putting the tree in the bag then putting it in the original box.

Time to start putting away my decorations!

Pause

Posted by: | Comments (1)

This could be a delightful season for you. If you take moments to enjoy.

This is a season of lights, music, good food, and beautiful decorations.

Many are too busy setting these up to enjoy them. Instead of looking at the decorations after they put them up, it’s time to rush to the next activity.

Noticing and pausing doesn’t take much time. Just a moment. After completing something, how would it feel to savor it?

I love to turn out the lights, put on music and stare at the tree after we put it up. Or admire a delicately wrapped present.

Pausing to notice fills up your soul and you feel happier.

During your holiday preparations, see if you can take a moment to notice.
