An idea that worked well for me last year, was a 30 day spending fast. And I enjoyed having the company of others. So I am going to start this years spending fast on May 1st.

At the end, put the money you saved in savings or use it to pay down debt.

The goal is to buy only the necessities like food. And really discover needs vs. wants. Some ideas to help:

  • Eat from your pantry
  • Stay out of stores you tend to impulse buy at
  • Only run errands once a week
  • If you see something you think would be really helpful to you, write it on a list to buy next month. See if you still feel this way next month.
  • Barter/trade/borrow

I’m in! I did a spending fast in Jan and was very surprised at what I didn’t need! I need some extra money for June, it will will be good to see what I can save by then!

I’m with you on this one! I went to craft shop yesterday simply to get 2 yards of fabric and left the store with $40 of craft supplies and storage baskets. And the fabric? I LEFT WITH NONE! I’m ready to begin! Good luck everyone.

I can relate to Andrea, which is why I’ll try this too. I overbuy on books and art and craft materials. Most of it is very useful, but not being used because I have to organize my house first. Why am I not organized? Because I’m spending my time spending (lol)!

I’m in. I have to have surgery later in May and will need the extra money in June and July while drawing disability pay. This sounds like a great idea and a great thing for me to try.

I am so happy you are doing this. I need to not spend for a while so that I can pay the house fire and liability insurances. It would be great to get ahead just a little bit.

    Hi!

I am planning on going on mostly a spending fast for the month of May.

Not sure I will do it 100% but have decided to buy nothing that isn’t necessary with the exception that I wrote out 4 envelopes with week 1, week 2, etc. on them and put a $5.00 bill in each.

“If” I want to go shopping during the month, I can take that $5.00 and see what I can get with it from things I find that I can use or want but once that $5.00 is gone, that’s it … no more!

So, I won’t be doing a true spending fast but for me, it’ll sure be much better than I’ve done in a long time.

By the way – I just want to say how very much I enjoy your posts, you are such an inspiration. Thank you!

    Love,

    Jennelle

    Hi,
I’m in. In February I made up my mind I would not go to Wal-Mart unless it was for medicine from the pharmacy. It really felt good. Now I can go in, get what I need and leave.
I like the idea of having to wait instead of impulse buying.

I’m going to try this again this year, but as I said last year this is a tough time because of all the gifts to give this time of year…Mother’s Day, graduations, at least I have no weddings, oops, yes there is one before the end of May. I try very hard to be a “good” gift giver( ie. as clutter-free as possible and more creative than expensive). That will help! I am looking forward to the fast for general things though and like someone said, staying out of Wal-Mart and craft stores!!!!!

Great idea, since I will cutting down 2 days out of the month to reduce the stress at work. I will be losing around $112 a month, but to me it is worth it. The stress at work, and I can take alot of stress, is really wearing me down and affecting (sp) my moods and eczema. Also, I can’t make up for loss time with my two girls. I am frugal to the bone already, but knowing that others will be taking up this challenge will encourage me to do the spend fast!

Renee, it will be so worth it! I am glad you will be able to spend more time with your girls and relax.

    You can do it LuAnn!

    This is a great idea!
We are on a ‘permanent’ spending fast.–every month. 🙂
    It does work.
I’m amazed at how obvious our WANTS & NEEDS became very obvious.

I had a spending fast in August and saved about two-thirds of my check. The amount I saved was just $20 short of what I paid for a plane ticket to visit my family in December. I’m going to do this more often!

Count me in…multiple trips to the Vet and husband having surgery this month is a good time for me to do this!
