Kathy, our Simplicity Makeover winner, has been doing great. She took care of a big something that was being procrastinated on and did some decluttering.
She asks, "I get overwhelmed and discouraged with too long of a routine list, but also am prone to forget it if I don’t write it down. Any thoughts?"
With all the things we are "supposed" to do every day to keep us, our family, our home and everything else in tip top shape it’s no wonder we are overwhelmed.
For your routines, there are a few things you can try:
1) Time how long it takes to get things done and write that next to the item. It may be easier to load the dishwasher if you find it only takes 3 minutes. And making a bed may only take 30 seconds. This also allows you to be more realistic. If you add up how long things take and you don’t have room in your day after work things may need to be done less. Which brings me to the next suggestion.
2) Try splitting your list into 3 section for your dailies. Divide your dailies into 1/3rd. The first day start with the top third. If you finish and decide to do more that is just a bonus. The next day start with the second section. And the next the third. Any time you do something from the other day, it’s a bonus. And most of the chores will get done every day or two.
3) You can also split your routine list by times of day. A morning checklist, after work checklist and before bed checklist.
4) If you have things that you automatically do together like dishes, sweep and clear table. You can put it as one item – clean kitchen.
