Organizing Kitchen Cabinets

12.12.2013

I had a reader, email and ask how to organize kitchen cabinets. Here are some of the tips I sent:

  • Use a rack for your bowls and small plates (big plates if you have the room)
  • Pans can go on a rack on the wall or nested in a cabinet
  • If you have non-stick plans, put paper towels between pots and pans
  • The lids can go into a slot organizer like for mail
  • Cutlery needs a drawer/utensil organizers to keep knives, forks, spoons, etc. separated
  • Glasses can be placed upside down in the cabinet
  • Spices are good on a lazy susan in the cabinet
  • Boards can go next to the microwave if they don’t fit in drawers
  • Daily small appliances can go on the counter
  • Less used appliances can go into the cabinets
  • Cookbooks can go on a high shelf or a bookshelf on the wall. I would suggest though that favorite recipes be put in the computer. Most cookbooks can be given away unless you use them a lot.
  • Have a recyclable station in the basement or garage
  • The most important thing is to not have lots of stuff in the kitchen you don’t use

What tips help you in the kitchen?

I use magnetic hooks on my refrigerator that has the left hand side facing my counters to hold my measuring cups and measuring spoons. Here is a link to them from Home Depot. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Liberty-Magnetic-Decorative-Hooks-in-Chrome-Plated-B46204C-CHR-U/203343546?N=b9o2%3FNao%3D48

I found them on the way to doing this http://journeyswithjuju.blogspot.com/2012/06/kitchen-measuring-organizer-diy.html which is still a good idea if you have a few paintsticks an some extra time.

I have a medium size bakers rack that I hung S hooks from to hang my pans and I love the professional feeling it gives me. there are also shelves for my mixer, bowls, etc., and a wooden shelf. If I didn’t have room for it, I would hang a pretty curtain rod and use the S hooks for the pans, as I really like the look and convenience. I would hang a cute sand pail for the utensil holder.

Organizing kitchen cabinets is really tough if your kitchen is small. You can do one thing. Contact a kitchen remodeling company. Or you can do another thing. Choose your own custom kitchen cabinet designs.

I like your suggestions about cookbooks. Aside from giving away, you may also sell these as second hand.

I love the tip for the pans! It is very annoying to take the pan from the cabinet and all the other stuff in there to fall down. I will definitely find another place for the pans. Regards!
