Really, Truly

11.06.2011

What are you not allowing yourself to do?

I know so many people that have something they love, that gives them energy, that lights them up. But, they don’t let themselves do them.

There is always an excuse – no time, too tired, the kids need me, I haven’t finished everything I need to do.

So they don’t want to wake up in the morning because all they have are duties ahead of them. Their days sludge along in todos. Sometime they will give themselves a break – tv, internet surfing, texting. Some mindless, easy activity.

But, they don’t give themselves what they really, truly want. Time to read or dance or walk outside. Maybe it’s sewing or learning something new. It could be acting, writing, or seeking solitude.

It can be scary giving yourself what you want. Will you be loved or respected if you don’t finish everything for everyone else? Maybe you won’t finish everything perfectly if you are making time for things you love. Or what if you give yourself that time and that’s all you want to do and don’t want to do your responsibilities. Or you find out you are so burnt out that even doing things you are passionate about doesn’t give you the energy you want.

Some kind of fear is usually under not giving yourself what you need. If you haven’t been giving yourself what you need and want, try asking yourself why.

What do you really, truly want that will light you up? Can you schedule some time this week for it?

  • Beth,

Thank you for this post. I think we are all guilty of sacrificing our passions. Things we enjoy take the back seat to things that need doing.

I am thinking of you and your family as the holidays approach. This will be our first without Joseph.
